Could Unsustainable Electronics Support Sustainability?

Information and communication technologies are often considered by policymakers, industrial stakeholders scientists as a key lever in the run towards sustainability, since they should ease energy efficiency dematerialization. In this opinion article, nurtured inputs of broad panel experts, we challenge widely spread view highlighting detrimental social environmental footprints caused digital technologies. We further take critical look on ways innovation is conducted nowadays, i.e., with an almost exclusive focus performance few considerations for externalities. This leads us to call academic teaching programs advocating holistic approach, new business models, ambitious political decisions able drive paradigm shift mainstream agenda electronics transition that shall significantly contribute well-being everyone, everywhere, without compromising future generations. conclude cannot support long-term sustainability if their only purpose remains optimization current system.
